How to Help a Highly Anxious Child: Part 4 of 4 with Dr. Allen Weg
I have the symptomes of OCD, it started when I was like 7 or 8, I watched an episode of a show and it scared me badly. I thought some bad things that happend there will happen to me. I started to be obsessed with the number 4 and sleep with my right hand close to my face and I also kept repeating words in my head, even sentences. When I do something 3 times I have to do it another time to make it 4. I hate it. I want to tell my parents but they won't believe me, because they can't see what's going on my mind 24/7. I was always too scared to tell them. Also, I'm not diagnosed but I have all the symptomes...
I found it
Ok so how do I do this?
Black and White thinking vs. Shades of grey. I need to learn more about this and implement it. Great video!
This is amazing! You really go the extra mile for your clients!
Hi Jenny, thank you so much -- that is so kind! It's been a work in progress figuring out how to keep clients (especially kids) engaged without meeting in-person. If you have any tips that work for you, I'd love to hear them! Thanks again for your kind words. --Megan Cox, PsyD
Thank you
Thank you!
Great advice. Honestly, I think a lot of the anxiety people are feeling stems from putting too much faith in who our next President will be and from exposing themselves to too much news media. I think the more we realize that there are things we do not have complete control of, the better. Sure we can individually control who we vote for, but we have no control over who other people vote for. We need to understand that for some of us, the results will not go as we hoped and that we should focus on the parts of our lives that we can control and to make the best of it.
Bonjour, Stress and Anxiety Services of NJ. it's exceptionally really video. thanks. :)
Outstanding presentation. Most knowledgeable and well prepared.
At the end Ralph was the winner in the same way we can beat ocd we will be the winners
I unfortunately can’t use the YBOCS. I just can’t get past question 4 and 5, since now days best treatment for OCD would focus on not trying to resist or control thoughts rather allowing thoughts to be there or to come and go if that’s what they’re going to do while putting our focus on whatever it is we’re doing and going about our regular life as best we can. I wish they’d revise those two questions. I’m curious how others are using it and how they deal with these two questions especially when their clients ask what it’s asking. It’s symptom checklist which seems the focus of this video is still very useful! Any other OCD assessments that you like to use to measure symptom change over time?
Hi Tara! With regards to the Y-BOCS questions, Dr. Cindy Haines responded, "I believe those questions are to determine if people spend a lot of time trying to push the thoughts away so we can ascertain their level of reassurance. I don't think those questions are designed to be in favor of pushing those thoughts away." Thank you so much for watching our video and taking the time to respond!
Share this with everyone you know, we haven't been using the acronym correctly this entire time!!!
I am constantly in fight or flight mode because of my core obsessive fear.
If you are still struggling, consider getting help from a mental health professional. There is no reason that you need to suffer- there are things that can be done to make a significant difference in your life when it comes to core fears. Just make sure you go to a mental health professional that you trust knows how to treat these problems.
What if you can't rate your anxiety? What if there are too many obsessions or thoughts to choose from to start working on?
Don't forget to say not to reassure yourself by saying, "it's just a letter".
All the tips are gold material, thank you very much

How could exposure therapy be used to quiet a mind terrified of a distant non existing past work related error or errors ... thanks
Sorry, Leo, I must have missed this comment way back when you posted it! Anyway, hopefully you no longer need this informaiton, but just in case, when the obsession is a worry about a memory from long ago (concerned that you did or didn't do something, for instance) the idea is to figure out what you are afraid might have happened, or the thing that you might have done, and then engage in what we call, "script writing," which is essentially writing out the thing that you are afraid that maybe you did (in your case, that you made that work related error). You then read it oul loud to yourself over and over for a period of time (20 mins? 30 mins?) every day until you feel your anxiety lower as a result of repeated exposure. If the feared event is incredibly terrifying, than you can start by writing a less intense version of the story, and only later, after your anxiety lowers, do you then add more intense details. Again, in yiour situaion, making a mistake at work, yoiu could start by having a story where you made an error in calcuaions that resulted in $100 off in your total, and that caused an employee to lose that money. At a later time yoiu might work it up to an error that involved hundreds of thousands of dollars, and was made in such a way that maybe if anyone ever notices the books, they would come after you and accuse you of trying to steal the money from the company- or something like that- I think yoiu probably get the idea.
This is good advice. I make more progress doing easier to medium stuff than trying heroics. Just keep doing it and you will build up.Only do heroics if you have a support net in case of a backfire.
Wow. Didn't know impulse control ocd is "a thing." Can you suggest where I could learn more about fear of impulse control ocd?
Glad you covered this topic. Amazing how many ERP specialist out there gloss over cognitive ocd.

Thanks :)
+Arun Kumar , No problem! Glad you enjoyed it!
Hi Doc, I experience high anxiety when I do ERP, what should I do during this period of time? Should I just ignore it? what can I tell my mind when I experience high anxiety to let go?
+Ryan Tan , The point of ERP is in fact TO generate anxiety. Your focus should be on the MEANING of the anxiety you experience - it means you are taking the opportunity to fight back against OCD, not allowing it to control your behavior, and that you are investing in a future in which OCD will exert less control over your life.
Great video that really help explain how the process works--and why it works.
Thank you so much +Mark Joyella for the support and the feedback!
Best video I have ever seen on ERP exposure for OCD - am showing this to many of my therapy clients. Thank you Dr. Weg!
